The 2017 FA Community Shield is just two days away! Whether you consider it a pre-season match, or the first of the new campaign, this fixture is always exciting, especially when featuring the Gunners.

So, let’s take a look back through history with a short quiz about Arsenal’s Community Shield History.

Arsenal’s Community Shield History: a Quiz

Question 1; How Many Community Shields Have Arsenal Played, and How Many Have They Won?

The FA Community Shield started in 1908 as the Charity Shield. The competition was suspended during both World Wars, meaning that this year’s edition will be the 95th game of its history.

Arsenal have played in 21 of these Community Shield matches and took home the trophy on 14 occasions. The Gunners won 13 of those matches outright, but in 1991 when the competition allowed the teams to remain tied after 90 minutes, were forced to share the glory with some club named Tottenham.

Manchester United have played in the most Community Shields with 30 total appearances, and have earned the most wins with 21. Liverpool are tied with Arsenal as far as appearances go, but won the trophy on 15 occasions for second all-time.

The Gunner’s first win came in 1930, the first time they appeared when they beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1. Arsenal’s last match in the competition was in 2015 when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Chelsea.

Question Two; What is Arsenal’s Goal Record in Those Matches?

The Community Shield is usually a goal bonanza as neither team treats the match like a Cup Final. So, it is not unusual to see scorelines like 4-3, 3-2, or even 4-0.

The Gunners have netted 39 goals overall and leaked just 15. In fact, Arsenal haven’t shipped a goal in the Community Shield since the 58′ in the 2005 edition, which was also played against Chelsea.

So, Arsenal will enter Sunday’s Final without having conceded in the competition in twelve years and 212 minutes. Despite the good defensive record, the strike rate is below-par; 39 scored in 21 games equals 1.86 goals per game, which is less than their 2.03 per game from the 2016-17 EPL season.

Question Three; What is Arsene Wenger’s Record in the Community Shield?

The Boss has been with Arsenal since October 1, 1996, and is now officially the longest-serving manager in English history. So, with so much time spent around the FA, it is no surprise he has coached several Community Shields already.

Overall Wenger has won six of the eight Community Shields he has managed, losing only twice. The first was a loss on penalties in 2003, at the beginning of the Invincibles campaign, and the second a 2-1 loss to Chelsea in 2005 to kick off the trophy drought.

Wenger had to wait almost two years after his appointment to feature in the Community Shield, winning the 1998 edition in a classy 3-0 win over Manchester United. One year later he again got the better of Sir Alex Ferguson with a 2-1 victory.

The Frenchman’s last two outings have also yielded wins, over Manchester City 3-0 in 2014, and over Chelsea 1-0 in 2015.

Question Four; What Team Has Arsenal Played the Most in the Community Shield?

Through the Gunners’ 21 appearances in the competition, they have faced 11 different opponents. Most have only met Arsenal once in the Community Shield, but a few have squared off with the North Londoners multiple times.

Sheffield Wednesday played Arsenal twice in the 1930s, with each team winning once. Among the earlier opposition, the Gunners faced was also West Brom, Everton, Sunderland, Blackpool and Preston North End.

The North London Derby also appeared at the 1991 Community Shield, which ended in a frustrating draw.

However, by far the team that has played Arsenal the most in the Community Shield is Manchester United. The two have faced off 6 times in the competition, with the Gunners winning 4 times. The Londoners also hold the advantage in the goal department, scoring 14 against the Red Devils, while allowing 7.

Liverpool are second on that list with three games against Arsenal in the Community Shield, and Chelsea are joint-third with the other Manchester club. The Citizens squared off against the Gunners first in 1934, and then in 2014, losing both by a combined score of 7-0.

Question Five; What is Arsenal’s Record Against Chelsea in the Community Shield?

The Blues have appeared 11 times in the Community Shield, good for joint-third all-time with Everton. However, Chelsea have only been victorious 4 times.

Their first match was the 1955 Final which they won convincingly over Newcastle 3-0. They had to wait all the way until 2000 to get their second triumph, but have not done well recently.

Chelsea have won only one of their last six Community Shield games, with the last win coming on penalties.

Despite a combined 32 appearances, this particular Derby has only been played twice in the Community Shield. They first met in 2005, not long after the Abramovich take-over, and the Blues squeaked by 2-1 victors. Ten years later Wenger got his revenge over Jose Mourinho, who was in his second spell at Chelsea when Arsenal won 1-0.
