The big news in Arsenal’s summer has always been the Alexis Sanchez transfer saga. However, as the Chilean is still in north London, attention is shifting to other Arsenal players. The latest news is all about Theo Walcott and his possible escape route.
Is Theo Walcott Leaving Arsenal?
Apparently, Everton are keen on the Arsenal man and are ready to spend big to get him.
The Mirror report that Ronald Koeman & Co. want a replacement for Yannick Bolasie, who is currently injured. While Leicester City’s Demarai Gray has also been linked, the fact that Theo Walcott will probably have limited opportunities next year may mean he is on his way out of North London.
Arsene Wenger confirmed just days ago that Arsenal will continue using the 3-4-3 formation that helped them win eight of their last nine matches last season. Theo Walcott, as a winger rather than a wing-back, does not have a clear-cut position in that lineup.
The reported transfer fee is $38 million for the former Southampton Academy man, who joined the Gunners in 2006 for just $12 million.
In over ten years, Walcott has made 377 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions, scoring 104 goals. This is despite suffering criticism for his inconsistencies and for falling short of his potential.
Right now, Arsenal have one of the largest teams in the Premiership. While depth is good, too much depth can have an adverse effect on a team.
Theo Walcott is probably the perfect example. Since the shift in formation, the winger has had to warm the bench in favor of others, such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. If Wenger does not decide to revert to his preferred back four, Walcott will surely look for greener pastures at some point.
After all, he is in his prime and needs to play. Let’s not also forget about the World Cup next summer. Surely Walcott will want to make the England squad, but can’t do that without regular minutes.
