Lucas Perez to Return to Deportivo La Coruna

Just weeks after being stripped of his number 9 shirt, Lucas Perez seems to be nearing a return to his former club. Arsenal signed Perez from Deportivo La Coruna last summer for just over $22 million, but simply couldn’t offer the Spaniard enough game time.

Now the player’s agentĀ confirms the La Liga team has made an official bid for Perez.

Deportivo La Coruna in for Lucas Perez

The striker’s last appearance was as a sub in the FA Cup Quarterfinal against Lincoln City. Perez started just nine games in all, just two in the Premier League, and also added 12 substitute appearances in all competitions.

During his twelve-month stay at the Emirates, Lucas Perez scored seven goals and created five assists. These goals, however, came against lowly opposition; five of the strikes came in just two games, versus Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup, and Basel in the Champions League group stage. He also added two assists against Ludogorets in the Champions League.

After Alexandre Lacazette was given the number 9 shirt without Perez’s blessing, the Spaniard spoke out against Arsenal. He revealed he was prevented from transferring to China in January, and was promised more minutes.

Agent Speaks Out

As we all now know, Lucas Perez was hardly involved with the team after Danny Welbeck returned from injury. The frustrated striker’s agent, Rodrigo Fernandez Lovelle, was questioned in London about his client’s future.

“I’m here to see (the) Emirates Cup and to be with Lucas. We have talked to everyone. Arsenal know we want to go, that there are no opportunities here, and within a year there is a World Cup. Would you not be angry and sad and upset if you had your squad number taken without being asked?”

“Deportivo La Coruna made an offer a week ago. It is a permanent deal and worth more than Nolito’s move to Sevilla ($10.5 million). Lucas signed for Arsenal and was the happiest person in the world and with all of his dreams to fulfill. We have seen that every time he played he did well, but after every time he got fewer and fewer opportunities.”

All the limelight is on Alexis Sanchez and his potential transfer away from Arsenal this summer. But for Lucas Perez the writing is on the wall.
